And the Beat Goes On
To paraphrase Sonny and Cher, "And the work goes on, and the work goes on. On and on and on and on and on."
We are now in our third month of repairing the Victory. We're getting close, but there are still a few questions.
Friday March 1st 2013 through Wednesday, March 6th 2013– Ensenada
I’m still on the prescription trail. I have run out of the doctor prescribed pain killers and am suffering. We went to Costco after work to get the prescription filled. Costco has everything.
Wrong. They don’t carry controlled substances. They suggested we go to Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart didn’t have the drug in stock. They ordered it for us to pick up the next day. The next day they had it, but it came in boxes with 20 tablets per box. My prescription was for 30 tablets per box. They wouldn’t sell me the 20 tablet boxes. I had to go back to the doctor and have him re-write the prescription for 20 tablet boxes.
The same with one of Dawn’s prescriptions. The doctor ordered 90 tablets. The pills come 30 tablets to the box. Easy, right? Just sell us three boxes.
Uh-uh. They can only sell a customer two boxes at a time. OK, then just sell us two boxes. We’ll get a new prescription for the other box. No, the prescription says 90 pills, they can’t sell us 60 pills.
This whole prescription system is wacked. There is at least one, sometimes two or three pharmacies on every block, but they can’t sell you anything. I asked a local what do they sell and he said they sell Viagra and anti-biotics to the touristas.
So Tuesday, I picked up the new prescriptions and took them to the pharmacy at Soriana (the local Fred Meyer). Of course they didn’t have the drugs in stock, but they would order them.

So Tuesday, I picked up the new prescriptions and took them to the pharmacy at Soriana (the local Fred Meyer). Of course they didn’t have the drugs in stock, but they would order them.
When I returned to pick up the drugs, they didn’t have them. They forgot to order them. They were very sorry, but I was in pain. I tried to be polite and said I’d pick them up tomorrow. They said they’d give me a discount.
So, I have been without pain meds for a week now. I’ve taken several days off from sanding and stripping and that helped. But yesterday I went back to sanding because we have to get the job done. Last night I suffered.
In spite of my personal problems, we are making progress on the boat. When we arrived at the boat yesterday, they had faired out the hole repair and coated the bottom with a black epoxy/tar sealer. It needs to dry for a day, then they’ll apply another coat. After the second coat, it will dry for four days, then they can put on the primer.
The cement guy showed up and put the first layers of sealer on the cracks on the afterdeck. We’ll get that fixed soon.
They finished filling in the final holes in the keel and faired them out. It feels like we’re really making progress.
I’ve completed a whole lot of little projects and Dawn has finished painting the spindles on the taft rail. The carpenter is finished with the repairs on the starboard cap rail and Dawn will start painting that today. We still need the carpenter to finish the repair to the stern cap rail.
We should finish up all the sanding today and be ready to apply the first coat of stain to the teak. It looks so beautiful when it’s clean and sanded. I wish we could leave it this way, but it will turn a dingy gray within a week or so.
So today we start the “varnishing” process.
We still want to paint the cabin, patch the scratches on the hull and re-do the non-skid on the deck before we go. I also have to install the new stove and the compressor for the refer/freezer. But we’re getting close.
I can picture us having the boat in the water by the end of next week.
Tomorrow we make another trip to San Diego to pick up parts that are on order.
My new plan is to leave Ensenada on March 30th. That should give us a week’s leeway to get the boat in the water and get her prepped before we head out.
