When Pendleton Wallace releases a new book, it’s a cause for rejoicing.
Cyberwarfare is up to the minute, unfortunately, underscoring the potential damage the misuse of the internet can create. Ten years ago, this book would have been considered science fiction. Now it’s our very dangerous reality.
Caterina Flaherty, one of my favorite characters of all time, is absent in this book, taking a well-deserved time off to regroup.
Even though I love when they work together, Ted Higuera is equally wonderful on his own in every one of his books, and hers. . He’s heading an organization to help women, comprised of woman, and doing a masterful job of substituting for her until her return. (Which I hope will be soon.) As always, violence against women, and how to combat it, are at the heart of the book. And, unfortunately, our society.
Ted is also trying to cope with his son being withheld from him by a former girlfriend who is now the leader of a drug cartel, (that’s another situation, read the previous 3 books to find out why, they’re great) and it’s not going well. His knowledge of the Internet and professionals who can get to the bottom of those manipulating it is something that no one else can accomplish. Even Ted can’t do it by himself, so he brings in a friend. The criticism of his friend’s Google/Microsoft/Silicone Valley type employer rings very true in today’s climate of the real company’s employee protests, and public criticism.
But it’s not an object lesson, or a preachy book, its character driven and simply well written and a great read. The plot is fast paced, believable, and will keep you engaged whether you know anything about the Internet or not.
If this is the first time you’ve come across a Penn Wallace book, I’m jealous. You have the fun of reading them all for the first time.
