The Cartel Strikes Back
The fifth book in the Ted Higuera series, The Cartel Strikes Back, is a novel of love, revenge and the Mexican Drug Wars.
Ted finally man's up and pops the question, but Maria can't give him an answer.
Chris loses his dad, Harry Hardwick, and trouble ensues for Candace and him at Hardwick, Bernstein & Johnson.
Maria disappears into Mexico and Ted goes in search of his Novia.
Ted's little brother, Carlito, is arrested for a gang-style slaying.
There's enough action and human interest here to stir your bones.

Actual Reader Reviews
Set in Mexico with a complex story and interesting characters
John Matlock on October 16, 2016
Note: I received an ARC (Advanced Reading Copy) of this book and am using it as the basis for this review. Perhaps the author sent me the ARC because he knew I liked the previous books in the Ted Higuera series.
While the previous books take place in Seattle (mostly) this one is set in Mexico and concerns the inheritance of a drug cartel. While I don't know what would really happen in such a situation, the story here seems quite realistic. There is a lot of turmoil, numerous characters and a whole bunch of twists and turns as one group does something to hurt the others. Of course there is violence as it is well known that the cartels are inclined that way. The ending is a surprise. Perhaps it shouldn't have been, but it was to me. So much of a surprise that I still wonder how it would all play out. Perhaps we will find out in the next book in the series.
Mr. Wallace's mother was Mexican. As a young boy he spent several years living in the Hispanic part of LA. He brings a knowledge and feel for the Mexican view of situations that you don't find in books where the angle writer is making assumptions about life in Mexico.
All in all, a book both enjoyable and well worth reading.
